Project #1 - 2015

Our first project for 2015 is a set of KAFO leg braces. So far we have measured our client and began the creation.

Our client is after a leather look, so in the image above you can see the start of the braces. The brown parts are the under-padding where the leather will be applied to and give it the look it's after. Shows have also been made to accompany the braces and have been altered to be attached by the bases of the shoes to the calipers as you can see below.

The boots above feature an adaption to the heel that allows for the calipers to be attached and removed to allow for ease when putting on or taking the shoes off/ attaching the calipers.

The knee covers are made from authentic leather and will be covered over again for an added layer of comfort and security, adding more laces, leather straps and buckles, to get the vintage look.

Now we decide what leather we want to cover the braces padding. We do this by taking a roll of leather, and laying it over the brace to see how much of the fabric we will need and measure the sizes before cutting and stitching it all on.

Here they are all leathered up! All that is left to do is add the knee covers correctly and attach any loose straps. All the materials are hand stitched on to guarantee accurate and secure stitches.

The Finished product!

Above are images of the completed brace. These took approximately 3 weeks to create and only required measurements supplied by the client as well as two fittings at our location for any other changes they wanted.

  1. Is it possible to have buckles on the thigh and calf cuffs instead of the lacing? And what about the stirrups? Do you use the British cylindrical stirrups or is there a choice to have the rectangular American style?
